Zhang Haidi Awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of the University of York

Zhang Haidi, Chairperson of China Disabled Persons’ Federation, was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor by the University of York in Beijing on March 20, 2013 for her outstanding accomplishments in literature as well as her contribution to promoting the work for people with disabilities in China.

In line with the Work Program on Disability during the 12th Five-Year Plan Period and relevant action plans, disabled persons’ federations at all levels further strengthened their work in rights protection for disabled persons. They built up their capacities of right protection, improved the legal systems related with disabled persons. The work of rights protection was carried out in an all round way.

Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation of the pictures

In 2011, through implementation of some key projects, 6.318 million disabled persons received rehabilitation services of different degrees. The Campaign of Building Model Community or County was staged to vigorously promote community-based rehabilitation (CBR).

Education

Education of the pictures

In 2011, disabled persons’ right to education was better guaranteed. The quality of disabled persons and their ability to equally participate in social life were improved. The education project funded by dedicated lottery fund provided 10,000 person/times of financial support to disabled children from poor families in their preschool education.

Employment

Employment of the pictures

In 2011, the work to promote employment of PWDs made new progress. 318,000 disabled persons in urban areas were newly employed, including 97,000 through concentrative placement, 75,000 through quota scheme, 21,000 through welfare post and 125,000 through individual business and other forms of employment.

Poverty Alleviation

The work of poverty alleviation made remarkable progress with the living and production conditions of poor disabled persons further improved. In 2011, 2.118 million poor disabled persons were covered by poverty alleviation projects, including 1.222 million who got rid of poverty through the projects. 923,000 persons/times of training of practical technology were provided.

Accessibility

In 2007, access legislation and standards were further improved. Relevant regulations and administrative decrees were issued by 6 provinces, 76cities and 350 counties.

Cultural Activities

In 2011, centered on the major tasks of the work on disabilities, humanitarianism was advocated, the social impact of and attention to the work on disabilities were remarkably upgraded, and a conducive public atmosphere was created for the sustainable development of the work on disabilities.

Sports

Sports of the pictures

In line with the national strategy of promoting equal enjoyment of basic public services and building social security and social service system for disabled persons, efforts was made to develop sports of disabled persons in a coordinated way. “Promotion of disabled persons’ sports with great efforts” was included in the National Fitness Plan (2011-2015).
