Zhang Haidi, chairwoman of the China Disabled Persons Federation (CDPF), visits Liu Jijun’s home in Beijing on Dec 22.
Zhang Haidi, chairwoman of the China Disabled Persons Federation (CDPF), visited Liu Jijun’s home in Beijing on December 22. Liu was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) more than 10 years ago, and from that time has been unable to move anything except his eyes.

Zhang asked about Liu’s situation, his rehabilitation services and health subsidies. After his diagnosis Liu remained positive even though he was living in misery and difficulties. He set up a website for people with ALS to exchange rehabilitation experiences, and encouraged them by writing down his feelings in 300 thousand words. Liu and his family also helped establish the first ALS care center in China.

Zhang spoke highly of Liu’s effort in fighting the illness, and send consolation money to the family from CDPF.

Zhang said that ALS causes severe disabilities to the patient, and that a normal family can hardly afford the cost of treatment, which is a heavier burden for poor families. Relevant departments should issue more policies and measures to help families with severe disabilities.

Zhang said that during the 13th Five-Year Plan, poverty alleviation, especially for those living with severe disabilities in the countryside, will be a major task for the CDPF. The disabled should get more healthcare subsidies, rehabilitation services, and be able to live a decent life.

The CDPF will promote the construction of Rehabilitation University and cultivate more professionals in rehabilitation work. Rehabilitation textbooks will be published for better education; major medical labs will be constructed to help prevent diseases and reduce disabilities; and improved assistive devices will be developed to help the disabled live more conveniently.
