Zhang Haidi, chairwoman of the China Disabled Persons' Federation (CDPF) and president of Rehabilitation International (RI), on July 5 met with President-elect of the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Tijjani Muhammad-Bande.
On behalf of the CDPF, Zhang welcomed Bande and congratulated him on his election. She said the UN has devoted a great deal of attention to the issues of people with disabilities, playing an important role in promoting their rights and interests.
The CDPF has been maintaining good cooperative relations with the UN and promoted its initiatives related to the people with disabilities. She highly appreciated Bande’s intended focus on poverty alleviation, education and inclusive development during his term as UNGA president.
Zhang pointed out that Chinese government attaches great importance to the undertaking of people with disabilities, promotes the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. China has established and keeps improving the security systems for people with disabilities, especially women and children, that protect their rights and interests.

China has helped people with disabilities to get rid of poverty, increased employment, used big data to improve their lives and provided targeted services for them, according to Zhang.
She added that the CDPF attaches great importance to the right to good health of people with disabilities. The soon-to-be-built University of Rehabilitation Studies will cultivate more professionals for better rehabilitation services to the disabled.
Since her time as the president of RI, she has been striving to promote the development of people with disabilities around the world, expand the global network of RI, establish funds for people with disabilities and African Fund, and initiate rehabilitation projects in Africa, Zhang said.
Zhang said that there are one billion people with disabilities in the world, and she hopes UN to establish an effective mechanism to encourage the international community to provide more welfare to them.

Bande spoke highly of the achievements that China had made in protecting the disabled’s rights and interests. He also expressed his admiration for Zhang’s effort in promoting the development of people with disabilities around the world. He stated that the establishment of the University of Rehabilitation Studies will both benefit people with disabilities in China as well as in other countries.
Bande pointed out that he will encourage inclusive development as one of his work priorities after taking office as president of the UN General Assembly. He expects to foster further cooperation with the CDPF and RI in the affairs of people with disabilities around the world, and to jointly promote their rights and interests.
