Zhang Haidi, chairwoman of the China Disabled Persons' Federation (CDPF) and president of Rehabilitation International (RI), called for coordinated efforts by governments, social organizations for people with disabilities, and research institutes to better meet the needs of the disabled for assistive devices.

Zhang made the remarks at the opening ceremony of the Russia Innovation Technology Expo held in Moscow on October 31.

According to the World Health Organization, there are over one billion people across the world who need assistive devices to help them better cope with their physical disabilities in various forms. However, about 90 percent of them have no access to those devices in their lives.

Zhang emphasized that as concrete measures are taken to resolve the insufficient supply of assistive devices for people with disabilities there is a promising future for their development based on scientific and technological innovation and humanistic care.

The CDPF has attached great importance to the provision of assistive devices to people with disabilities and has proactively taken part in international cooperation in relevant sectors over recent years, said Zhang, who went on to say that a closer partnership has been formed between the CDPF and its Russian counterpart in the fields of rehabilitation, sports and assistive devices.

She stressed that the two sides should further strengthen their exchanges and cooperation, promote the application of high technologies in the design and production of assistive devices, provide better services and equipment for people with disabilities, and help them enjoy integrated and respectable public lives.

According the organizers, the expo, which was convened from Oct 31 to Nov 2, was the largest event ever for the exhibition of barrier-free facilities, rehabilitation products with modern technologies, and the application of the latest rehabilitation technologies in Russia.
